My thoughts on the Nigerian pastor who has been setenced to death (Part 2)

Hey there, thanks for checking my blog out. This is the second part of a two part series, so please read my last post here before you continue 🙂

Continued from here.

I understand that sometimes, we may need help with reading the word of God and developing the habit of spending time with Jesus. We may speak to our spiritual leaders, read books, and listen to sermons. But it is absolutely paramount that we never rely on the “help” more than we do the Holy Spirit. Even when we’re reading a book about prayer, we must spend adequate time in prayer. We may say, how do I pray if I don’t know how to pray? We must practice what we’re reading in our so called spiritual help books. Ask God to teach you how to pray, don’t over spiritualize everything. You don’t have to start out speaking in tongues the first time you open your mouth to pray. Remember that the Holy Spirit is the greatest teacher so say a simple prayer “Lord, I don’t know how to pray, can you please teach me?” Say what comes to your mind, but say it genuinely. God cares more about your heart than about your hefty tongues, or lack thereof.

Enjoy this song by Nathaniel Bassey, a Nigerian gospel musician. It’s quite a lovely song and I’m sharing it because it’s literally playing as I write hehe. :p

If we’re listening to sermons about reading the word of God, we must read the actual word. We must physically open the pages of our bibles and read the words. You can use a book as a guide, but open the bible and read the words on the pages. You can begin from the new testaments, which (some people argue) are easier to comprehend than the old testament. Otherwise, begin by reading stories about the men and women in the old testament.

Everyone loves a good story, and as we read, the Lord will continue to guide and direct us to spiritual maturity.

This is paramount to developing an intimate relationship with God.

That said, if you’re reading this post and you haven’t spent time in your bible in the past 24 hours, please take a break from my blog and read your bible. If you’re confused, you can start from either Psalm 91 or Psalm 42. You won’t regret it, I promise.

Finally, I wonder what drove Rev King so far away from the gospel of Jesus, or if he ever had a heart for God in the first place. Pastors and prophets are very often surrounded with controversy, and while the devil does attempt to defeat those who stand for Jesus, I feel particularly fearful for Rev King’s congregation. Preachers are not gods or idols. They are men and women like you and I.

I wonder if Rev King began his ministry with excessive religious zeal and was misled by religion, and not spirituality. Indeed, religion without spirituality is dangerous. Without a genuine desire to know God and draw others to Him, religion is made of laws that exclude and divide. When we love God, we genuinely draw people to Him. We let Him have all the glory, and we remove ourselves from the equation. We truly understand that our reward is not in cars or houses but in the kingdom of God.

Whatever the case may have been with Rev King, I do honestly pray for his genuine repentance. (Please take a moment to pray for Rev King to return to Jesus before his impending execution.) I pray that the members of his church will know God for themselves and be saved from the tragedy of idolizing preachers and not God Himself.

That’s it for today, friends. I want to try and do more serious minded posts like this on Mondays and Tuesdays then the Soundtrack for your week posts on Sundays and perhaps something more fun on Thursdays?

I don’t know, the Holy Spirit will lead me.

Have a lovely week ahead and thanks to all the new fans on my facebook page! I see you and as you’ve liked my page, may the Lord bless you, keep you, and draw you closer to Him and Him alone.

Lots and lots of love from me. Enjoy the rest of your week 🙂
