I wonder how many of us actively pray and ask the Holy Spirit to be our companion in our daily lives. Very often we struggle with things because we do not have the Spirit of God living inside of us. It’s really simple to get the Spirit of God indwelling in you. Once you accept Jesus as your Lord and savior and get baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, you have the Holy Spirit living inside you. Just like any other friendship, we only have to cultivate and strengthen the relationship through constant communication and quality time.
The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Holy Trinity, He is the living and breathing Spirit of God. In my sermon this afternoon, the preacher said that he had heard the trinity likened to the sun. God the Father is the sun, the originator, Jesus Christ is the light that we get from the sun, and the Holy Spirit is the heat from the sun.
There aren’t an awful many passages in the bible where the Father, Son, and Spirit are evident at the same time. But one very important example is found in Matthew 3: 16-17
“16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Jesus promised to send us the Holy Spirit in Acts 1:8, the Spirit of power, who will make us witnesses unto God even to the ends of the earth. The Holy Spirit is the comforter, the paraclete, and the counselor of the believer.
Romans 8:26-28 highlights the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives:
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
All emphases in the above passage are mine.
We know God’s purpose for us through the Holy Spirit who reveals it to our hearts, we understand God through His spirit which enables us and reveals the deepest things of the earth to us.
The power of the Holy Spirit is the gateway to spiritual power, without which we cannot live our full essence as christians. Unless we have the Holy Spirit living inside us, we will succumb to the pressures of life and sin on the outside of us.
The dwelling place of the Holy Spirit is the heart of the believer, that is why in 1 Corinthians 6:19 the bible says
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own”
The Holy Spirit longs to dwell with each one of us and give us the full benefits of a Christian life. Until we make Him our closest companion, our lives in God are incomplete.
I hope that we begin to earnestly desire the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Imagine how much easier our lives would be if we had the Holy Spirit as our companion at all times. The good news is that we already do, we only need to spend more time in the scriptures which were inspired by the Holy Spirit, and let Him inspire our lives also.
Most of my thoughts in this post were inspired by the sermon titled “Who is Holy Spirit?” by D.K. Olukoya.
